2016 Pennants Finals

September 08, 2016 at 5:41 AM

Third time lucky and no weather interventions this time at Grafton Golf Club hosted the Mid North Coast pennant Finals last Sunday. Rearranging the fixtures has proved difficult but on a perfect day for golf Divisions 1, 2 and 4 were decided.

Coffs Harbour repeated their win from last year defeating a determined Woolgoolga team. The early signs looked good for Woolgoolga however the Coffs team rallied and were able to come away with the win. Dan Swain was the first winner for Coffs leading most of the way to defeat Mark Beales 5 and 4.  Chris Neville squared the ledger when he closed out Mark Brindle 4 and 3. A strong back nine saw Aden Louez restore the advantage for Coffs. Shane Cutmore and Aaron Hart were having a mighty battle and superb par saves on the final two holes clinched the match for Cutmore and put Coffs into and unbeatable position. The anchor match between Tim Hyland and Logan Toms was also a close battle. Hyland birdied the 9th and 10th holes to edge ahead and another win on the 13th gave him a two-hole advantage until the 17th hole when the match was called off as Coffs were holding an unbeatable 3-1 lead. The Coffs team were undefeated throughout the series and deservedly took home the title.

The Division Two final was a replay of last year and the result was again a triumph for Urunga when they defeated Coffs Harbour 3½ matches to 1½.

Mat Quirk gave the Coffs team an early lift when he defeated Allan Thomas in the first match out however Urunga were quickly back on level terms when Grant Squires accounted for George Rauporo. Todd Riley proved too steady for Sam Mackay in the middle match and Urunga were looking strong the retain the title. The final matches were close after nine holes and mid-way through the back nine it remained that way but some pin point iron play from John Lindsay clinched his match again Andrew Frawley and this gave Urunga and unassailable lead . The final match remained close until the end with a squared result between Kim Michelson and Grant Purdy the final result. Division Two saw some epic matches throughout the year but it was Urunga who produced the better golf when it most counted.

The Mid North Coast District Golf Pennants Final in Division 3 was played last Sunday at Coffs Harbour Golf Club. Due to a clash of dates with Club Fixtures this event was not played the previous week with the other Finals.

The final was played between Sawtell and Bellingen and as is fitting in all finals the winning team was decided on the last green. The first match out saw Sawtell draw first points when John Arnold took a narrow 2 and 1 victory over Col Osland. The Bellingen boys were quickly back on level terms when Craig Warman accounted for Josh Lewis. The remaining three matches all went to the 18th hole. Putting on the last green proved the decider for Sawtell as firstly Steve Sharp beat Glen Jones and then Bryce Clugston accounted for Scott Hulbert. Sawtell had gained its three wins and the Division 3 trophy. Team Captains Scott Devoy (Sawtell) and Nick Jenkins (Bellingen) had fought it out to the last hole fittingly finishing all square leaving the final result Sawtell 3½ to Bellingen 1½.

The Division 4 battle between Woolgoolga and Dorrigo was a heat stopper of the day and it went into extra holes to decide the winners. Peter Herwig gave Dorrigo first blood with a win over Phil Newell but again as in previous divisions Peter Grolten put Woopie back on level terms when he accounted for Lachlan Brown. Glenn Mahoney beat Jim Fahey to put Woopie back in front but Mitch Beaumont again squared things up defeating Ray Issacs. The last match between Paul De Veer and Jack Anderson went to sudden death and when Anderson’s putt dropped to give Woolgoolga the win the cheers could be heard half way across the course. The spirit of the match was fantastic as was the series and this was echoed by all players who took part.
